Fresh Fruits and Veggies in DTR
Eat Your Veggies … But Where to Buy Them?
Mama says eat your fruits and veggies, but where can you buy them fresh if you’re not at a downtown Raleigh restaurant? When you want to cook at home with fresh produce, but don’t want to drive to a grocery store, we have your go-to list of nearby shopping sources:
Weaver Street Grocery. Of course, it’s the most obvious place for fresh fruits and veggies in downtown Raleigh’s core. This NC-based food co-op stocks it all, with a healthy selection of organics, plus it has a salad bar when you don’t want to chop your own. (404 W. Hargett St.)
DGX – No, we’re not kidding. This Dollar General Express has a pretty well-stocked selection of fruits and vegetables. Plenty of options, too, to make a salad or a healthy dinner. (149 E. Davie St.)
Downtown Farmers Markets:
Moore Square Market. Check out the produce vendors at this DTR weekly market once the market cranks back up for the season on May 14. It runs every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Oct. 22. (200 S. Blount St.)
Raleigh City Farm has a Pay what you can Farmstand that runs Wednesdays 4-7 p.m. starting April 19 at the farm at 800 N. Blount St. and at The Salvation Army (902 Wake Forest Road) Monday through Friday from 2:30-5:30 p.m.
Logan’s Garden Shop – You just never know what you might find at the check-out area of this long-time garden shop in Seaboard Station. This past week, there was a beautiful selection of juicy tomatoes and some ripe strawberries. (707 Semart St.)
Glenwood South Pharmacy – If you’re in a pinch for a lemon or lime for a recipe or post-workout banana, pop into Glenwood South Pharmacy. There’s a small selection of essential produce. Time it just right and you might find sweet potatoes and onions. (401 Glenwood Ave.)
If all else fails, there’s always Publix at 417 W. Peace St.!
