Sounds of the City
Live music is a pleasure in life. Whether it’s enjoying a local show at the record shop, catching an outdoor banger at Red Hat Amphitheater, or relaxing to the sounds of the symphony at Meymandi Hall, we love it all. Keep reading for our rundown on the sounds of the city, and check the bottom of the blog for a list of upcoming shows!
Underground n’ Grungy
Pour House Music Hall (224 S. Blount St.) is a record shop by day, and a music venue by night. It’s Raleigh’s home for all things music, featuring national and locally touring bands and an extensive vinyl collection to browse. Find yourself in an adventure as you explore down the narrow, graffiti covered alleyway into the setting.
The Lincoln Theater (126 E. Cabarrus St.) is a cozy venue that truly matches the atmosphere of Raleigh. It’s small, but not boring: spacious, but not overwhelming. Drink prices are decent, and the acoustics are great.
Classy Night Out
The state headquarters venue for the North Carolina Symphony is the lovely Meymandi Concert Hall at the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh (2 E. South St.). A guaranteed peaceful evening will come from watching a show like this.
Watt’s and Ward is a 20s-inspired speakeasy that hosts live music shows on its back terrace (200 S. Blount St.). The outdoor shows are more frequent in the warmer months, but Watts and Ward doesn’t close shop in the winter, either! Last year at New Year’s, the band was a vibe.
Get a Group Together
Ever since Red Hat Amphitheater (500 S. McDowell St.) was built, there hasn’t been much competition for the most impressive venue downtown. A gorgeous shimmering mural by Thomas Sayer twinkles in the background as you watch the sun set over your favorite musician…perfection.
Neptunes Parlor (14 W. Martin St.) is a late-night basement lounge offering locally sourced craft beer & cocktails, with pinball & DJ shows. Grab your friends, throw on some sparkles or shades, and go shake your tail feathers!
Small Jams and Open Mics
Every second Sunday, Tongue and Groove puts on an epic open mic at VAE Raleigh (228 Fayetteville St.). It’s a hyperlocal community of poets, musicians, and storytellers. Whether you are performing or just listening, to attend Tongue & Groove is to co-create the show. Your presence and attention charge the room and change the energy!
Beer and Banjos, every Tuesday upstairs at Raleigh Times Bar (14 E. Hargett St.), is always a good time. Get your toes tapping while you enjoy a Belgian beer, a plate of fried pickles, and some hardcore banjo business.
