Raleigh Street Style
Do you think where we live influences our personal style?
The weather has its obvious effect: function, fit, occasion, and personality of course weigh in, too. The people you spend time around and the way you were raised are also factors.
Curated selections available at local boutiques surely feed into the fashion patterns seen around town. And, accessibility is to note. Lots of people are shopping online and seeking inspiration from all over the world in addition to shopping locally.
So what makes Raleigh’s style unique? It’s not about trends or being fashionable. It’s about self-knowledge, self-confidence and how we choose to express that! Overall, Raleigh has a relaxed and confident sense of style.
What are people wearing in DTR?
For the girl boss, tailored minimalism is the wave. A well-fitted pair of jeans and a french style blazer does the trick for this look.
Multicolor dresses, beaded body necklaces, and drop earrings are also popular choices in DTR. Nashona on Hargett Street has a stunning collection of authentic Tanzanian clothing.
Others are choosing more eclectic ensembles that spark joy. Edge of Urge, Unlikely Professionals, and Father and Sons are a few prime spots for finding high-quality, “conversation-starting” pieces in town.
Of course, you have your classic businessmen sporting suits and ties, but the modern downtown worker is often seen in jeans, stylish sneakers, and a short sleeve button-down. Raleigh Denim is the place to go for a crispy pair of jeans for this fit.
DTR is super walkable, so comfort is key. Lunch picnics, dog walks, and people watching = sundresses and hats (Flourish Market). Sweat sets and minimal gold jewelry (Curate). Over-the-ear headphones (Decree). Yes.
Tiled bags like this Bao Bao are super in (and there is no shame in buying a look-alike because that price tag stings!). Lots of DTR folks enjoy a more earthy vibe and might opt for something cute and reusable instead like this tote from Munjo Munjo.
The younger crowd has its glaring trends: claw clips, beaded bracelets, and 90’s throwbacks. For the trend trackers out there, Urban Outfitters in the Warehouse District is a home away from home. For streetwear buffs, Social Status in City Market is the go-to spot for sneakers and designer street fashion.
Depop’s online store is a popular choice for finding obscure pieces at a lower price. Some people really make a sport out of vintage shopping! NC Vintage Bazaar comes to town every so often (The next one is Feb. 25!), if you love graphic tees this is your heaven. Unorthodox Vintage on Wilmington Street is another popular spot to find hand-picked gems with a story.
